3.0L inline-6 turbo engine with mild hybrid drive

Three types of boost allow the G 550's advanced new inline-6 to deliver higher peak power and greater efficiency than the outgoing biturbo V8. With an exhaust-gas turbo supplemented by an electric auxiliary compressor, the gas engine outputs 443 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque on its own. The lightweight, fully beltless engine is also electrified: An Integrated Starter-Generator can supply up to 20 hp and 184 lb-ft at certain rpm, allow gas-free coasting, and recapture energy during deceleration.

Three lockable differentials

As you make your way off-road, three sequentially lockable differentials offer increasingly masterful capability. Each differential can be locked in sequence (center, rear, then front) via a set of buttons on the dash, to help maintain the ideal balance of torque and traction for the situation.

9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission

With a greater range of ratios and shorter steps between gears, the 9-speed automatic changes gears more quickly but nearly imperceptibly. Along with a more seamless delivery of power, the lighter, more versatile transmission enhances quiet riding comfort and, with three overdrive ratios, fuel-efficiency. The electronic selector and shift paddles let you control all gear changes with your hands on the steering wheel. And drivers can vary the shift modes via the innovative DYNAMIC SELECT system.

DYNAMIC SELECT

A multimode drive program selector on the console lets you dial in the vehicle's performance character to suit your needs or your mood. DYNAMIC SELECT offers six preset modes: ECO, Comfort, Sport for on-road use, plus an Individual mode you can configure a la carte. Trail, Rock and Sand modes are tailored to different off-road situations. Each mode adapts the throttle response, shift programming, ESP^® and suspension damping.

Fresh take on a familiar face

The round headlamps and upright G-Class grille may be timelessly iconic, but electrification inspires a modern aesthetic to G 580 drivers so inclined. In place of the standard four-louver grille, a sleek black panel with an outline illuminated by an LED lightband is available as well.

G 550 styling options start with the sporty bumpers, wheels, brakes and even sounds of the AMG Line. To that you can add any of several black-accented Night Packages. Or you can head out for adventure with the rugged G PROFESSIONAL Package.

Thoughtfulness to spare

While the G 550's rear door-mounted spare tire has long been a signature element of its functional design, the electric G 580's Design Box takes its place with new purposes. It opens up to reveal a provision for the charging cable, plus two nets for stowing other gear.

A network of LEDs can create not just a soothing ambience in the cabin, but one you can alter to suit your mood, or even create one. Edge-lighting glows from beneath the dash trim, behind the in-dash screens, in the footwells and in other key areas. Along with 64 selectable colors, four cabin zones and adjustable brightness, numerous programs let you adapt the atmosphere with two or even five colors at once, or with a dynamic mode that slowly changes the colors as you drive.

60/40-split folding rear seats

The G-Class can accommodate up to 68.6 cubic feet of cargo with the 60/40-split rear seats folded. Floor-mounted tie-downs, a side parcel net, and both 12-volt and household-style 115-volt power outlets add to its convenience.

12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display

A 12.3-inch high-resolution color screen in front of the driver offers customizable instrumentation. Selectable designs let you choose among analog-style gauges plus digital and graphical readouts. A multifunction screen can offer illustrated and animated menus, plus readouts for vehicle information, feature settings and driver-assistance systems. It's easy to scroll through the menus via the left steering-wheel Touch Control Button.

SmartKey with KEYLESS-START

Elegantly designed to be sleek, stylish and compact in your pocket, the SmartKey remote control integrates remote door locks and a remote panic alarm. You may selectively unlock only the driver's door and fuel filler, or all doors plus the fuel filler. The vehicle can be started via a pushbutton in the dash, thanks to a standard KEYLESS-START feature.

Burmester 3D Surround Sound system

The Burmester^® 3D system pairs innovations in mobile audio with legendary quality. A Digital Signal Processing amp can output 760 total watts to deliver a natural sound spectrum in any music genre. An advanced system of 10 air bags can offer 12-way occupant protection. Dual two-stage front air bags, front and rear side-impact air bags, dual front knee air bags, and side curtain air bags for both seating rows are standard.

Active Lane Keeping Assist

With technology to monitor ordinary road markings at most driving speeds, Active Lane Keeping Assist can help detect unintended drifting off-course, and alert you by vibrating the steering wheel. If you continue to drift, it can selectively brake individual wheels to help guide the car back into its lane.

Blind Spot Assist with Exit Warning Assist

When traveling above approximately 20 mph, radar technology can help sense when a vehicle enters the blind-spot area. Blind Spot Assist can then alert the driver via an illuminated red icon in the appropriate side mirror. An audible warning sounds if the driver activates a turn signal while a vehicle is detected in the blind spot. After parking, Exit Warning Assist can alert the driver or passengers to vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians that could be at risk if the door is opened.

Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

Using the ultrasonic sensors of Active Parking Assist and the radar sensors of Blind Spot Assist, this system can help audibly and visually alert the driver to approaching cross-traffic when backing out of a parking space at low speed. Especially helpful if your view is obstructed by vehicles or structures, the system can also apply the brakes. The sensors can also help detect if the driver has engaged the wrong gear or pedal for exiting a confined space.
