As you make your way off-road, three sequentially lockable differentials offer increasingly masterful capability. Each differential can be locked in sequence (center, rear, then front) via a set of buttons on the dash, to help maintain the ideal balance of torque and traction for the situation.
An advanced V8 biturbo engine generates 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque from a compact 4.0 liters of displacement. Able to thrust the G550 from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds, it features a "hot inside V" turbo layout, patented low-friction NANOSLIDE® cylinder walls, and an ECO Start/Stop system.
The standard G-Class permanent all-wheel drive system continually sends power to all four wheels. Its 4-wheel Electronic Traction System (4-ETS®) instantly apportions torque to the wheels that can use it best, for surefooted grip on snowy and wet roads. Off-road, its locking differentials help you conquer muddy, loose or uneven terrain.
An ECO Start/Stop system automatically shuts off the engine at stoplights and other idle situations, to save fuel and reduce emissions. As soon as the driver lifts off the brake, the engine instantly restarts, for immediate acceleration response. The ECO Start/Stop system can also be shut off by the driver at any time.
Even with its perpetually fresh design, ergonomic layout and advanced luxuries, the G-Class cabin remains a living tribute to a tradition of hand-craftsmanship that's all but vanished from the earth. And for decades, a single inspector has allowed no G-Class to undergo your scrutiny until it first surpasses his.
Exquisitely handcrafted cabin appointments offer an almost unlimited palette of personalization: Literally dozens of Nappa leathers, in a variety of styles, colors and stitching details. Six hand-finished cabin trims in rich wood or carbon fiber. And a rich spectrum of paintwork, from classic solids to modern matte finishes.
The sporty 4-spoke steering wheel puts the handling confidence of the G-Class literally in the driver's hands. Convenient multifunction controls do likewise with the most frequently used vehicle functions, along with an illustrated color menu display in the gauge cluster. Black Nappa leather is hand-stitched to the wheel's rim.
At the touch of a button, the steel sunroof tilts up at the rear for ventilation, or slides open for a breezy view of the sky. An express feature fully opens or closes the roof with a single touch, and a manual sliding sunshade helps block out unwanted sunlight.
All new Mercedes-Benz vehicles are protected by our New Vehicle Limited Warranty, covering defects in material or workmanship for 48-months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. For added protection, the Mercedes-Benz Extended Limited Warranty offers continued peace of mind with prolonged coverage tailored to your needs.
Radar-based cruise control can adapt your set speed in response to the flow of traffic ahead. If traffic slows, it can reduce your speed until your path clears. If the vehicle ahead slows to a stop, Distance Pilot DISTRONIC® can brake to a full halt. When traffic moves, you can resume with just a tap, or automatically if the stop is under a second.
At most driving speeds, radar technology helps sense when a vehicle enters the blind-spot area. An icon illuminates in the appropriate side mirror to alert the driver of a detected vehicle. The system also gives an audible warning if the driver activates a turn signal while a vehicle is detected.
This safety breakthrough first introduced by Mercedes-Benz continually monitors your driving inputs and the vehicle's motion to help keep it going in your intended direction, especially in corners and during evasive maneuvers. If it detects wheelspin, severe understeer (plowing), or oversteer (fishtailing), ESP® can brake individual wheels and reduce engine power to help bring the vehicle under control.
Shift into Reverse, and a rear-mounted camera displays a live 180-degree view of what's behind the vehicle on the screen atop the dashboard. Active on-screen guidelines indicate the car's projected path as you turn the steering wheel.
