The SL sport exhaust system not only enhances performance but serenades it with the rich sounds emanated from the four polished-chrome tailpipes. Electronically controlled internal flaps respond to engine rpm and throttle loads, as well as the selected drive mode, to serenade acceleration and higher revs with a rewardingly throaty growl, yet with a pleasingly mellow tone during relaxed, quiet cruising.
Lighter, quicker and more efficient, the new 9G-TRONIC automatic puts a wider range of ratios with shorter steps between them, to keep you on top of the SL450 and SL550 torque curves. New DYNAMIC SELECT has a mode for every mood, adapting the throttle, shifting, steering and more from Comfort to Sport+. There's even a mode you can customize.
Built and signed by its own "meister," the heart of an AMG SL roadster is its handcrafted biturbo engine: a 577-hp V8 in the AMG SL63 and the SL65's 621-hp V12. Turning raw power into refined performance is a litany of engineering derived from a legacy of racing victory, from the growl of their exhaust to the grasp of their massive brakes.
With rigid yet lightweight components, the 4-wheel multilink suspension teams with semi-active damping for crisp handling with silky smoothness. Industry-advancing Active Body Control® (ABC) adds innovative curve-tilting as an SL450 or SL550 option. The AMG Performance Suspension, also based on ABC, is honed to even sharper, track-tuned edge.
Bold and muscular yet flowing, the sporty standard lower bodywork looks as if was sculpted as much in the gym as in the wind tunnel. Large mesh air intakes underscore the wide, slatted grille with its integrated Star. Chrome details add subtle highlights to the car's athletic shape.
Crisp, bold and sporty 17-inch alloy wheels feature five sets of thin spokes with a shimmering machined finish and grey-painted inlays. They're outfitted with all-season Extended Mobility tires.(Models with Extended Mobility tires are not provided with a spare tire.)
Offering both front- and rear-seat passengers sweeping skyward views, this fully functional glass sunroof features a front panel that can either tilt up for ventilation or slide over the rear panel for an open-air feeling. Dual interior power shades with controls allow the driver and each rear passenger to adjust the amount of sunlight entering the cabin.
The classic two-seat cockpit embraces its passengers like the SL hugs the road. Technologically forward yet rooted in tradition, its open-air passion is met with unmatched civility, from its season-extending AIRSCAF® system to innovative sun-reflecting leather that's still carefully fitted to each seat by hand.
With an expansive variety of leather upholstery colors and interior trim options, the SL cabin isn't just impeccably crafted. It's individually tailored. A rich palette of full-grain, smooth Nappa and superlatively supple designo leathers complement hand-finished matte or high-gloss wood, textured aluminum, or genuine carbon fiber.
Specifically engineered for the SL, this premium digital sound system fills the cabin with 600 watts of beautifully balanced audio. No fewer than nine strategically placed speakers plus two subwoofers deliver a wholly immersive listening experience through Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound technology. Digital Dynamic Volume Control impeccably and imperceptibly maintains the sound spectrum for consistent listening pleasure in varying driving conditions.
Separate left and right temperature controls allow the driver and passenger to enjoy personalized comfort. In addition to fully automatic or manual control of blower speed and airflow distribution, the system includes sun and humidity sensors, a dust/pollen filter, and an activated charcoal filter that automatically recirculates cabin air upon detecting a significant increase in smog. It also automatically adjusts to whether the retractable hardtop is open or closed.
All new Mercedes-Benz vehicles are protected by our New Vehicle Limited Warranty, covering defects in material or workmanship for 48-months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. For added protection, the Mercedes-Benz Extended Limited Warranty offers continued peace of mind with prolonged coverage tailored to your needs.
Engineered from road to roof not just as a convertible but as a Mercedes-Benz, the SL body structure enhances both occupant protection and handling precision. Composed virtually entirely from stamped, cast, chilled-cast, thermoformed and extruded aluminum, the body shell is nearly 300 lbs lighter than before yet 20% more torsionally rigid. The only structural steel in the body is the windshield frame, whose "tube-in-tube" pillars offer high strength with minimal vision obstruction.
A Mercedes-Benz first, PRE-SAFE® can detect instability during certain vehicle maneuvers that suggest a collision or rollover is imminent. It can then tighten the seat belts and close the front windows, all in an effort to better prepare the occupants and restraints in the moments before a collision. If no accident occurs, the seat-belt tensioners reverse, and you simply continue on your way.
Radar-based technology can alert you if you're approaching a vehicle ahead, or even some stationary objects, at a speed and distance that suggest a collision is likely. As soon as the driver starts to brake, Active Brake Assist can automatically provide the ideal level of braking, to help prevent a collision or reduce its severity. The system can also provide autonomous braking at a range of driving speeds, and can activate the features of PRE-SAFE®.
Adaptive Highbeam Assist uses continuous input from a camera to automatically vary the range of your headlamps, based on the distance to oncoming vehicles and to those ahead of you. It's engineered to maximize road illumination without creating glare for other drivers.
